VNG TESTING
Videonystagmography (VNG) is an advanced diagnostic test that records and quantifies eye movements. Impaired eye movements are a critical part of the clinical picture in most neurological conditions, including concussions, traumatic brain injuries, vertigo, movement disorders, and many others. Precisely analyzing eye movements is often the key step in restoring neurological function.
HOW DOES VNG TESTING WORK?
There are numerous classes of eye movements, generated by specific parts of the brain, that work together to help you create a coherent picture of your world. By analyzing these movements, we can determine which parts of your brain are working well, which are not, and what needs to be done to restore proper function. Unlike conventional neurological imaging, VNG allows us to assess differing rates of neurological fatigability across individual brain regions, a critical step in rebuilding neurological endurance.
SACCADOMETRY
During VNG testing, we also assess a specific class of eye movements called Saccades through Saccadometry. Saccades are generated by the frontal lobes and are the primary system you use to build your visual map of the world. They are commonly impacted in concussions and traumatic brain injuries, and the patterns revealed by Saccadometry help us localize your neurological dysfunction and design your unique NeuroRescue Program.
WHEN IS VNG TESTING USED?
VNG testing is one of the core diagnostic tools used during your Discovery Day, alongside Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP) and Video Head Impulse Testing (VHIT). Together, these tests give us a complete picture of your neurological function.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
No. VNG is non-invasive and painless. You wear a pair of goggles that track your eye movements while you follow visual targets and complete simple positional tasks. Most patients find the process straightforward and easy to complete.
-
The VNG portion typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your symptoms and how many eye movement classes we need to assess. It is performed as part of your broader Discovery Day evaluation.
-
No referral is required. You can schedule your Discovery Day directly with our office, and we will determine which diagnostic tests are appropriate for your case.
-
VNG helps us identify neurological dysfunction linked to concussions, traumatic brain injuries, vertigo, dizziness, balance disorders, and movement disorders. By pinpointing which brain regions are underperforming, we can build a targeted treatment plan.
-
Avoid caffeine and alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, and check with our office about any medications that might affect the results. Bring a list of your current symptoms and any prior imaging or test reports.
